Literary Context

Hearing and seeing-
One of the features of Revelation is the difference between hearing and seeing. John will often hear one thing described, only to turn and see something else which subverts his expectations. The first time this happened was in Revelation 5, where he heard about the “Lion of Judah” only to turn and see “A lamb that was slain.” When this happens it is important to note that they are often talking about the exact same thing. What John sees illuminates and describes what he hears.

Symbols explained-
Another feature of Revelation is how the symbols are often explained, either by John himself or by one of his heavenly tour guides. So pay close attention to moments, after a vision, where those symbols/visions are then explained or interpreted. This will be key to understanding their significance.
